Thursday, September 24, from the Brussels museum apartment stole Rene Magritte’s painting “Olympia”. Informs AFP referring to the curator of the museum. The cost of painting is estimated at three million euros.
Masterpiece was abducted by two unidentified on a daytime, around 10:00, shortly after the opening of the museum, reports Le Soir. Criminals were not wearing masks, one of whom was an Asian, one spoke French, the other - in English, one had a gun. They broke into the museum and took a picture, not firing a single shot, then fled in a car.
The museum is located in the former home of the family Magritte, and usually takes visitors by invitation only, so one of the workers agreed to let the criminals inside to the museum (of course, he didn’t know that they were robbers). Eyewitnesses claim that the thieves came to the museum only for the “Olympia”. After the painting was removed from the wall, sounded the alarm. Soon the police arrived, but the criminals were gone. The police inspect the scene to find traces of the attackers, and also makes a facial composite.
Rene Magritte (1898 - 1967), one of the greatest representatives of Surrealism, he lived in a house on the Rue Essegem (rue Esseghem) from 1930 to 1954. Much of the environment is preserved in the museum since then.
